Acharacle is less then 5 minutes drive from the Dorlin Beech, where the world famous Castle Tioram lies, once home to the feared clan chief Allan of Clanranald. He orderd it to be burnt, probably to prevent it falling into enemy hands when he left to fight for the Jacobite cause. It has lain in various states of ruin ever since. It is closely linked with the beginnings of the Clanranald branch of the MacDonalds. The castle is now owned by a Scottish businessman, Lex Brown, who is hoping to conserve it through a Trust, despite recent set backs. Tourists will often see local Acharacleites breaking into the castle and if they are lucky may themselves be able to enter the magical fortress.
