Alaska Information

Alaska is a state of the United States of America, located in the extreme northwest portion of North America. It is by far the largest U.S. state in area, and is also one of the wealthiest and most racially diverse states.

The area that became Alaska was purchased from Russian claims on October 18, 1867; Alaska became the 49th state of the United States on January 3, 1959. The name "Alaska" is derived from the Aleut Alaskax, alternately spelled Alyeska, meaning "Land that is not an island."

Alaska is one of the two U.S. States not bordered by another state, Hawaii being the other. It is the only non-contiguous state in North America; about 500 miles (800 km) of Canadian territory separate Alaska from Washington State.
