Freetown Information

Freetown, population 1,070,200 (2004), is the largest city and capital of Sierra Leone, lying on the Freetown Peninsula on the Atlantic coast. The city is a port on the Atlantic Ocean.

Freetown's economy revolves largely around its harbour, which handles the country's main exports. Industries include fish packing, rice milling, petroleum refining, and the manufacture of cigarettes.

The city lies at the foot of the peninsula mountains and faces one of the best natural harbours on the west coast of Africa. The peninsula is home to some of the finest beaches in Africa - Lumley beach, Lakka beach, No. 2 river beach and Toke beach are some examples.
