Gatineau (2001 census population 226,296) is a city in western Quebec, Canada. It is situated on the northern bank of the Ottawa River, immediately across from Ottawa, Ontario, and is located within Canada's National Capital Region. Ottawa and Gatineau comprise a single Census Metropolitan Area.
Gatineau is the politically correct (French) name. Most English speakers still just call the main part of the city Hull. The whole area is basically a suburb of Ottawa, with thousands crossing the river every day to work. However, downtown Hull also has some government offices, and many people cross the other way to work there. Basically, there is one big city which used to be called Ottawa-Hull, but if you want to be politically correct, then you call it the National Capital Region and say it includes Gatineau. |
