Ireland Information |
Ireland is the third largest island in Europe . It lies to the northwest of Continental Europe with the island of Great Britain lying to the east. Politically it is divided into the Republic of Ireland, a sovereign state occupying five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, occupying the northeastern sixth of the island.
Ireland has fewer animal and plant species than either Britain or mainland Europe because it became an island very soon after the end of the last Ice Age, about 8,000 years ago. Nevertheless, it is home to hundreds of plant species, some of them unique to the island. |
English is spoken everywhere but Irish (Gaelic/Gaeilge) is the first official language. Most people have some understanding of this but it is used as a first language by only about 27,000 people, most of whom live in rural areas known as the Gaeltacht.
* IMPORTANT: due to certain restrictions, we may not be able to offer cover to certain countries if they are deemed a war-zone and/or if the FCO recommends no travel to the area/ region/ country. |
