Kent is sometimes known as the Garden of England because of its agricultural influence, extensive orchards and hop-gardens. The north Kent strip, however, is heavily industrialised. The cement, papermaking, farming and aircraft industry are among local industries that have been in decline in recent years, while tourism and service industries have grown to take their place.
