Martinique Information

Martinique is an island in the eastern Caribbean Sea, having a land area of 1,128 km², about six times the size of Washington, DC. It is an overseas department of France.

As an overseas "départment" of France, Martinique's culture blends French and Caribbean influences. The city of Saint-Pierre (destroyed by a volcanic eruption), was often referred to as the Paris of the Lesser Antilles.

It has tropical and humid with an average temperature 17.3 degrees C. The climate is moderated by trade winds. The rainy season is from June to October but the island is vulnerable to devastating cyclones (hurricanes) every eight years on average.
