Port Everglades is actually composed of land within three municipalities, Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale and Dania Beach and unincorporated Broward County. All port operations are handled by Broward County Board of County Commissioners. Also, due to the Port's size and various special security and safety considerations, fire, EMS, and law enforcement services are provided primarily by the Broward Sheriff's Office, with the various cities' departments providing assistance as needed.

Port Everglades is also one of the world's busiest cruise departure ports. It holds the world record for hosting the most cruise passengers in a single day with 44,108 passengers. More than 4 million cruise passengers pass through Port Everglades annually. Ships sail year round, but the peak season is from November to April.
